Ridge Modification
Ridge modification is a highly effective procedure designed to address deformities in the upper and lower jaws. These deformities can arise from various causes such as periodontal disease, trauma, injury, denture wear, or developmental issues. Unfortunately, these defects can result in insufficient bone for the successful placement of dental implants, leading to an unappealing indentation in the jawline next to the missing teeth.
During a ridge modification procedure, the gum tissue is carefully lifted away from the ridge, fully exposing the bone defect. The defect can then be filled with bone graft material, which promotes the regeneration of lost bone, or a bone substitute may be used. Afterward, the incision is closed, and a healing period of several months is necessary. The timing of dental implant placement varies depending on factors such as the specific condition of the bone, the type of implant, and the planned procedure. In some cases, the dental implant can be placed during the ridge modification procedure, while in others, it may be done after complete healing. Regardless, ridge modification significantly enhances the cosmetic appearance of the jaw, improves oral functionality, and greatly increases the long-term success rate of dental implants.
