Maintenance
You’re absolutely right! Plaque can quickly turn into calculus (tartar) within 24 hours if not effectively removed from the teeth. Daily home cleaning, including brushing and flossing, is crucial in controlling plaque and tartar formation. However, certain areas of the mouth can be difficult to reach and require special attention.
After completing periodontal treatment, your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend regular maintenance cleanings, typically scheduled four times a year. During these cleanings, the depth of the gum pockets will be carefully checked to ensure they are healthy. Plaque and calculus that are difficult for you to remove on your own will be removed from both above and below the gum line.
In addition to the periodontal cleaning and evaluation, your appointment may include various procedures:
1. Examination of diagnostic x-rays: X-rays are essential for detecting decay, tumors, cysts, bone loss, and determining tooth and root positions.
2. Examination of existing restorations: Your dentist will check the condition of any fillings, crowns, or other restorations you have.
3. Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for signs of decay.
4. Oral cancer screening: A thorough examination of the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums will be conducted to detect any signs of oral cancer.
5. Oral hygiene recommendations: Your dentist or dental hygienist may provide recommendations on oral hygiene aids such as electric toothbrushes, special periodontal brushes, fluorides, rinses, etc., based on your specific needs.
6. Teeth polishing: Stain and plaque that were not removed during regular tooth brushing and scaling will be removed through teeth polishing.
Maintaining good oral hygiene practices and attending regular periodontal cleanings are vital for maintaining dental health and effectively managing periodontal disease. These measures help control plaque and tartar buildup, prevent further progression of the disease, and contribute to overall oral health.
