Sinus Augmentation
A dental implant serves as an artificial tooth root that is surgically attached to the jawbone, providing a stable foundation for a replacement tooth or bridge. The success and durability of an implant hinge on the quality and quantity of the jawbone it integrates with. In cases where bone loss has occurred due to injury or periodontal disease, a sinus augmentation procedure can be performed to raise the sinus floor and stimulate new bone growth.
In the most commonly used sinus augmentation technique, a small incision is made near the upper premolar or molar area to expose the jawbone. A precise opening is created in the bone, and the sinus membrane is gently lifted upward. The space beneath is then filled with bone graft material, which can be sourced from your own body, a cadaver, or synthetic materials that encourage bone formation. After the grafting is complete, the incision is closed. The timeline for implant placement will vary based on individual circumstances and the healing process. Sinus augmentation has proven to enhance the success rates of dental implant procedures.
By undergoing a sinus augmentation, patients can improve the potential for successful implantation and enjoy the long-term benefits of a fully functional and aesthetically pleasing replacement tooth or bridge.
