Cephalometric X-rays
The cephalometric X-ray is a powerful tool that dentists use to get a more in-depth view of your facial side profile. By capturing images of your teeth, jawbone, and soft tissues that aren’t visible to the naked eye, your dentist can make more informed decisions about your oral health. Unlike other types of X-rays, cephalometric X-rays don’t require any plates or films to be inserted into your mouth, and they also show the nasal and sinus passages that are typically not visible on other X-rays.
While not as common as other types of X-rays, cephalometric X-rays play an essential role in dental care. They provide your dentist with a side profile view of your face, showing the position of your jaw relative to your cheekbone. They also provide valuable data about malocclusions or “bad bites,” and they enable precise dental measurements. In addition, cephalometric X-rays can help identify fractures and other injuries to your jawbone and teeth, making them an essential tool in orthodontic planning.
The process of taking a cephalometric X-ray is completely painless, and your dentist will ensure that you’re as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure. Your head will be positioned between a mechanical rotating arm and a film holder, and the arm will rotate around your head, capturing images of your face, mouth, and teeth. The quality and precision of these images depend on your body’s positioning, so your dentist will take great care to ensure that you’re in the correct position. The images can be magnified up to 30%, giving your dentist a clear view of any signs of decay, disease, or injury.
If you have any questions or concerns about cephalometric X-rays, don’t hesitate to speak with your dentist. They’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have and to help you understand the importance of this valuable tool in dental care.
