Sealants

A dental sealant is a thin plastic layer applied to the chewing surfaces of molars, premolars, and any deep indentations (known as pits and fissures) of the teeth. These deep grooves are where over 75% of dental decay originates. Teeth with such features are challenging to clean and highly prone to decay. A sealant safeguards the tooth by sealing these deep grooves, resulting in a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.

Sealants can shield teeth from decay for many years, but it’s crucial to regularly check them for wear and chipping during dental appointments.

Reasons for getting sealants:

  • Children and teenagers: Once the six-year molars (the first set of permanent back teeth) emerge, or at any point during the cavity-prone years of 6-16.
  • Adults: On tooth surfaces without decay that possess deep grooves or depressions.
  • Baby teeth: Occasionally, if the teeth have deep grooves or depressions and the child is prone to cavities.
What does the process of getting sealants involve?

Applying sealants is a simple process performed by your dentist or dental hygienist, with each tooth only taking a few minutes.

The teeth slated for sealing are cleaned thoroughly and then isolated with cotton to keep them dry. A unique solution is applied to the enamel surface to facilitate the sealant’s bonding to the teeth. The teeth are then rinsed and dried. The sealant material is meticulously painted onto the enamel surface to cover the deep grooves or depressions. Depending on the sealant type used, the material will harden by itself or under a special curing light.

Maintaining proper home care, a balanced diet, and regular dental appointments will contribute to the longevity of your new sealants.
