What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing and treating tooth misalignment and jaw irregularities. The word “orthodontics” is derived from Greek roots, with “orthos” meaning proper or straight, and “odons” referring to teeth. While orthodontic treatments were traditionally associated with teenagers and pre-teens, around 30 percent of orthodontic patients today are adults.
Having well-aligned teeth offers numerous benefits, including easier cleaning, improved oral hygiene, clearer speech, and a more appealing smile. While orthodontic treatment can be effective at any age, the American Dental Association recommends an orthodontic assessment around the age of seven. Early intervention allows for prompt resolution of issues.
Orthodontics can address various dental conditions, either independently or in combination with other dental specialties such as maxillofacial or cosmetic dentistry. Some common conditions treated with orthodontics include anteroposterior deviations (e.g., overbite or underbite), overcrowding, and aesthetic concerns related to misaligned teeth or facial structure.
Orthodontics offers advanced solutions for correcting malocclusions and cosmetic problems. After a thorough examination, including visual assessment, panoramic x-rays, and bite impressions, the orthodontist determines the nature of the discrepancy and recommends appropriate treatment options.
Common orthodontic treatments include:
1. Fixed orthodontic braces: These braces consist of metal or ceramic dental bases attached to each tooth, with a wire inserted through the bases. Regular adjustments to the wire gradually align the teeth. Once the desired results are achieved, the braces are removed.
2. Removable appliances: Various removable appliances are used in orthodontics, such as headgear to correct overbites, Hawley retainers to improve tooth positioning while the jawbone reforms, and facemasks to address underbites.
3. Invisalign®: This newer alternative involves removable transparent aligners that are virtually invisible. Invisalign® aligners function similarly to traditional braces but can be removed for eating. Not all patients are suitable candidates for Invisalign®.
Orthodontics continues to advance with innovative techniques and technologies to provide effective and tailored treatments for patients seeking improved dental alignment and aesthetics. Consulting with an orthodontist will help determine the most suitable treatment options for individual needs.
