Treatment
The treatment methods for periodontal disease vary depending on the type and severity of the disease. The dentist and dental hygienist will evaluate the condition and recommend the appropriate treatment.
In the early stages of gingivitis where no damage has occurred, one to two regular dental cleanings may be sufficient. Along with the cleanings, instructions on improving daily oral hygiene habits and regular dental visits will be provided to maintain oral health.
If the disease has progressed to a more advanced stage, a procedure called scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) will be recommended. This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia and involves the removal of tartar, plaque, and toxins from above and below the gum line (scaling) and smoothing the rough surfaces of the tooth roots (root planing). It helps to eliminate bacteria and promote gum tissue healing, reducing pocket depths. Medications, special mouth rinses, and an electric toothbrush may be recommended to control infection and aid in healing.
If the pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, or if the disease is severe, periodontal surgery may be necessary. Periodontal surgery aims to reduce pocket depths and make it easier to clean the teeth and gums. In some cases, a referral to a periodontist, a specialist in gum and periodontal treatment, may be recommended for specialized care.
It’s important to note that maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing regularly, along with regular dental check-ups and cleanings, are essential for managing and preventing periodontal disease. The dentist or dental hygienist will provide instructions and guidance on proper oral care to maintain oral health and prevent further progression of the disease.
