Tooth whitening, also known as bleaching, is a straightforward, non-invasive dental treatment used to alter the color of natural tooth enamel. It’s an excellent way to enhance the appearance of your smile.

Whiter teeth have become a top aesthetic priority for many patients, leading to several tooth whitening options. The most popular method involves a home tooth whitening system that can significantly lighten teeth. However, since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it’s important to consider the replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Any restoration replacements will be carried out after bleaching so they match the newly whitened teeth.

Tooth whitening isn’t permanent. Depending on lifestyle factors such as smoking and consumption of coffee, tea, or wine, touch-ups may be required every few years.

Reasons for tooth whitening include:

• Fluorosis (excessive fluoride during tooth development).
• Normal wear of the outer tooth layer.
• Stained teeth due to medications (like tetracycline, etc.).
• Yellow, brown-stained teeth.

Tooth whitening typically requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) of your teeth will be taken to create custom, clear plastic trays.

During the second appointment, the trays are fitted for comfort, with adjustments made if necessary. These trays are worn with a special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks, depending on the degree of staining and the desired whitening level. It’s normal to experience tooth sensitivity while you’re whitening your teeth, but this will subside shortly after you stop the bleaching process.
