Fixed Bridges
A dental bridge is a fixed dental appliance that provides an effective solution for replacing missing teeth. There are different types of bridges available, and your dentist will work with you to determine the best option for your specific needs. The most commonly used type is the “traditional bridge,” which typically consists of porcelain fused to metal.
A traditional bridge consists of two crowns that are placed over the abutment teeth on either side of the gap created by missing teeth. These crowns serve as anchors and are attached to artificial teeth, known as pontics, which fill the empty space.
Dental bridges are known for their durability and can last for many years. However, over time, they may require replacement or re-cementation due to normal wear and tear.
The benefits of getting a fixed bridge include:
- Filling the space left by missing teeth
- Maintaining the shape of your face
- Preventing the remaining teeth from shifting out of position
- Restoring your ability to chew and speak properly
- Enhancing your smile
- Upgrading from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance
The process of getting a fixed bridge typically involves two or more dental visits. During the first visit, the anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to accommodate the crowns. An impression of your teeth is then taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where the bridge will be custom-made. In the meantime, a temporary bridge will be placed to protect the prepared teeth.
At the second visit, the temporary bridge is removed, and your dentist will check the fit of the permanent bridge. Adjustments may be made to ensure a proper fit before the bridge is permanently cemented in place. In some cases, the bridge may be temporarily cemented, allowing time for your teeth and tissues to adjust before the final cementation.
Your dentist will provide you with instructions on how to care for your new bridge. Proper brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits are essential for maintaining the longevity of your permanent bridge.
