Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride stands as the most potent tool in our arsenal for combatting tooth decay. This naturally occurring mineral is found in almost all foods and water supplies in varying degrees. The advantages of fluoride for oral health have been widely recognized for over half a century and are endorsed by numerous health and professional bodies.
Fluoride serves a dual purpose:
- Topical fluoride reinforces the teeth once they’ve emerged, penetrating the tooth’s outer enamel layer, thereby making the teeth more decay-resistant. We obtain topical fluoride by using dental products laced with fluoride such as toothpaste, mouthwashes, and gels. Dental professionals usually advise children to get a professional fluoride application twice a year during dental check-ups.
- Systemic fluoride fortifies both the teeth that have erupted and those still developing beneath the gums. We obtain systemic fluoride primarily from our diet and community water sources. It can also be provided as a supplement in drop or gel format, prescribed by your dentist or physician. Typically, fluoride drops are recommended for infants, while tablets are more suitable for children through their teenage years. It’s crucial to keep track of a child’s fluoride consumption. Overconsumption during tooth development can lead to fluorosis, a condition resulting in white spots on the teeth.
Even though most individuals acquire fluoride from their diet and water, at times, it may not be sufficient to prevent decay. Your dentist or dental hygienist may suggest the utilization of at-home and/or professional fluoride treatments for various reasons, such as:
- Pronounced pits and fissures on teeth’s chewing surfaces.
- Exposed and sensitive root surfaces.
- Mediocre to poor oral hygiene habits.
- Frequent consumption of sugars and carbohydrates.
- Insufficient fluoride exposure.
- Decreased saliva production due to medical conditions, treatments, or medications.
- Recent history of dental decay.
Bear in mind, fluoride alone won’t stave off tooth decay! Brushing at least twice daily, regular flossing, maintaining a balanced diet, minimizing sugary snacks, and routine dentist visits are all essential components of oral health.
