Braces for Adults
Orthodontic braces have traditionally been associated with teenagers, but nowadays more and more adults are opting for braces to correct their teeth and bite alignment. In fact, nearly one third of all orthodontic patients today are adults.
Orthodontic braces are highly effective at realigning teeth, regardless of the patient’s age. However, treatment time is generally longer for adults, as their jaw growth has already stabilized and they may have gum disease that needs to be addressed before starting orthodontic treatment. Despite the longer duration, adults can achieve the same beautiful results as teenagers.
Are orthodontic braces beneficial for adults?
Absolutely! Crooked or misaligned teeth not only affect appearance but can also impact self-esteem and confidence. Moreover, improperly aligned teeth can cause difficulties with biting, chewing, and clear articulation. Orthodontists generally agree that straight teeth tend to be healthier.
Straight teeth offer numerous health and dental benefits, including:
- Reduced risk of tooth decay
- Decreased likelihood of periodontal disease
- Lower risk of tooth injuries
- Improvement in digestive disorders
Fortunately, orthodontic braces have been adapted to cater to the needs of adults. There is now a wide range of fixed and removable orthodontic devices available, depending on the specific malocclusion being treated.
The most common types of malocclusion include underbite (lower teeth protrude further than upper teeth), overbite (upper teeth protrude further than lower teeth), and overcrowding, where there is not enough space in the arches for all adult teeth.
Before recommending a specific orthodontic treatment, the orthodontist will address any pre-existing dental conditions, such as gum disease, excessive plaque, or tooth decay, as these conditions can be exacerbated by orthodontic braces.
What are the main types of orthodontic braces?
Here are some popular options for orthodontic braces:
1. Traditional braces: These braces are made of metal brackets that are cemented to each tooth. They are accompanied by an archwire that applies gentle pressure to shift the teeth into alignment. Traditional braces can also be made of clear synthetic material or tooth-colored ceramic, which are more comfortable but can be prone to discoloration from certain foods and habits.
2. Invisalign®: Invisalign aligners are a popular choice among adults because they are removable and virtually invisible. They are clear trays that need to be worn for the recommended duration each day to achieve optimal results. Invisalign aligners are more comfortable and less noticeable than traditional braces but tend to be more expensive. Not all patients are suitable candidates for Invisalign® treatment.
3. Lingual braces: These braces are attached to the tongue side of the teeth, making them virtually invisible when a person smiles. Lingual braces are typically made of metal and can be moderately expensive. In some cases, they may affect speech temporarily.
Each type of orthodontic brace has its own advantages and considerations. Your orthodontist will recommend the most suitable option based on your specific needs and preferences.
