Orthodontic Treatment Phases
Orthodontic treatment is a highly successful and predictable way to correct malocclusions and irregularities in the teeth and jaw. The treatment process typically involves two or three phases, depending on the severity of the condition.
The benefits of orthodontic treatment go beyond aesthetics. Straight teeth not only improve confidence and self-esteem but also enhance the functions of biting, chewing, and speaking. Common irregularities that orthodontics can address include overbites (upper teeth protruding), underbites (lower teeth protruding), crossbites (upper teeth closing inside the lower teeth), and overcrowding.
Let’s delve into the three major phases of orthodontic treatment:
Phase 1 – The Planning Stage: During this phase, the orthodontist conducts various evaluations to develop an accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment plan. This may involve medical and dental evaluations to ensure overall health, study models created from bite impressions to analyze tooth positions, panoramic X-rays to assess jaw joint health, and computer-generated images to visualize treatment outcomes. Photographs may also be taken to track progress.
Phase 2 – The Active Phase: Once the treatment plan is established, the orthodontist recommends a customized orthodontic appliance to gradually move the teeth into alignment. This appliance can be fixed, such as traditional braces or lingual braces placed on the inside of the teeth for improved aesthetics, or removable, like the Invisalign system, headgear, or facemask. Regular adjustments by the orthodontist ensure consistent pressure on the teeth for effective movement.
Phase 3 – The Retention Phase: After achieving proper alignment, the fixed or removable appliances are removed. A custom retainer is then created to maintain the new tooth positions and prevent shifting. Retainers are typically worn for a specified amount of time each day to allow the jawbone to stabilize around the realigned teeth.
Throughout the treatment process, regular visits to the orthodontist are essential. Any issues or damage to the orthodontic devices should be promptly reported.
