Periodontics
Periodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, which affects the gums and jawbone. The gums play a crucial role in supporting and surrounding the teeth, while the jawbone provides stability. Periodontists undergo extensive additional training to ensure the health, function, and aesthetics of the jawbone and surrounding tissues.
There are various reasons why periodontal treatment may be necessary:
Moderate/advanced gum disease: This stage is characterized by bleeding, swollen, or red gums around most teeth, accompanied by receding jawbone. Prompt treatment is crucial to prevent further damage.
Localized gum recession: Gum infection often begins in one area and can be caused by aggressive brushing or improper tooth positioning. Immediate treatment is necessary to prevent its spread.
Crown lengthening: Periodontists may perform this procedure to expose more of the tooth’s crown by removing surrounding soft tissue.
Ridge augmentation: Also known as “recontouring,” this procedure corrects an uneven gum line. Prior to treatment, any bacterial infections and periodontitis must be addressed.
In cases of mild to moderate periodontal problems, the focus is on curing the underlying bacterial infection and providing guidance on proper home cleaning methods. Deep scaling may be necessary to remove bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) from the teeth and gums. If periodontal disease is advanced and has caused significant jawbone regression, more intensive cleaning may be recommended, and loose teeth that cannot be saved may need to be extracted.
Periodontists are also trained in dental implant procedures, which can restore oral functionality when teeth have been affected by periodontitis.
Since periodontal disease is progressive, it is crucial to remove bacterial plaque and calculus to halt the infection’s spread. Your dentist can provide valuable guidance on effective cleaning methods and treatment options to address periodontal disease and maintain optimal oral health.
