Regenerative Procedures

Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that should not be taken lightly, as it can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. The disease occurs when bacterial infection in the gum pockets causes the gums and bone tissue to recede from the teeth. As the gum pockets deepen, the quality and quantity of the supporting bone and gum tissue diminish.

However, with timely diagnosis and effective regenerative procedures, it is possible to stop the progression of the disease and save the teeth.

Several regenerative dental procedures are available to restore health to the gums, bone, and teeth. The following are commonly used regenerative procedures:

Bone Regeneration:

A strong and thick jawbone is essential for successful dental implant placement and other restorative procedures. In cases where periodontal disease has caused bone loss, natural bone regeneration, or bone grafting, is a reliable method to promote bone growth and increase jawbone thickness.

During bone grafting, grafting material is obtained from another part of the body or a bone bank. The gums are gently retracted, and an opening is made in the jawbone, where the grafting material is tightly packed. A membrane helps maintain the shape of the new bone, and tissue stimulating proteins and platelet-rich growth factors may be applied to enhance healing. The surgical site is sutured and protected. Over time, the bone naturally regenerates, becoming strong enough to support dental implants.

Gum Tissue Regeneration:

Gum tissue regeneration is commonly achieved through gum grafting. When gum tissue is lost due to periodontal disease, the smile may appear unattractive and tooth roots may become exposed. Gum grafting aims to restore a symmetrical gum line, cover exposed tooth roots, and improve gum health.

During the procedure, a small strip of tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth and placed in a split-thickness incision at the recipient site. A protective membrane is applied to promote tissue regeneration, along with platelet-rich growth factors and tissue stimulating proteins. The surgical site is then sutured closed. The gum tissue surrounding the teeth naturally regenerates, resulting in a healthier smile.

Pocket Reduction Surgery:

Pocket reduction surgery is performed to reduce the depth of gum pockets, making it more difficult for bacteria to invade the gum tissue. During the procedure, the gum tissue is gently pulled back from the teeth, and under local anesthesia, the subgingival area is thoroughly cleaned. Extensive removal of plaque, debris, and tartar may be necessary from below the gum line. An antimicrobial agent is applied to eliminate remaining bacteria, and the surgical site is sutured closed. Pocket reduction surgery effectively stops tissue loss and promotes natural healing of the gums.

Scaling and Root Planing:

Scaling involves the removal of plaque and tartar from the supragingival region (above the gum line) and is typically performed during routine professional cleanings under local anesthesia. Root planing accompanies scaling and focuses on the subgingival region (below the gum line). Tartar and toxins are removed, and the tooth root is smoothed to promote optimal healing of the gum tissue. The smooth surface inhibits bacteria from recolonizing. In cases where infection persists, surgical intervention may be necessary.

It is important to address periodontal disease promptly through these regenerative procedures, as they can effectively halt the disease’s progression and contribute to the long-term health and preservation of your teeth.
