Porcelain Inlays

An inlay restoration involves the use of a custom-made filling constructed from composite material, gold, or tooth-colored porcelain. Porcelain inlays are particularly sought-after because they mimic the appearance of your natural teeth. A professional dental laboratory fabricates the porcelain inlay, which is then permanently bonded to your tooth by your dentist.

Inlays are a conservative yet effective solution to repair teeth with large defective fillings or teeth damaged by decay or trauma. They present an ideal alternative to conventional silver and composite fillings, and they are more conservative than crowns as less tooth structure is removed during the preparation for inlays.

Like most dental restorations, inlays might not be permanent and may need replacement in the future. However, they are highly durable and can last for many years, providing you with a lasting, beautiful smile.

Scenarios that may necessitate inlay restorations:

  • Broken or fractured teeth.
  • Aesthetic improvement.
  • Decayed teeth.
  • Cracked fillings.
  • Large fillings.
  • What does getting an inlay entail?

The inlay procedure typically involves two appointments. The first appointment includes the creation of several highly accurate impressions (molds), which will be utilized to fabricate your custom inlay and a temporary restoration.

While the tooth is numb, your dentist will remove any decay or old filling material. The area is then thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared to properly accommodate the inlay restoration. A temporary filling is applied to protect the tooth while your custom inlay is created in a dental laboratory.

During your second appointment, your new inlay will be meticulously and accurately cemented into place. Some minor adjustments may be necessary to ensure the inlay fits properly and your bite is comfortable.

Upon the completion of your treatment, you will receive care instructions. Adherence to good oral hygiene practices, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits will aid in extending the lifespan of your new inlay.
