Porcelain Onlays

An onlay restoration refers to a custom-made filling, crafted from composite material, gold, or tooth-colored porcelain. Porcelain onlays are favored due to their resemblance to your natural teeth. They are also referred to as partial crowns. A professional dental laboratory makes these porcelain onlays, which your dentist will then permanently cement onto your tooth.

Onlays offer a conservative solution for repairing teeth with large defective fillings or those damaged by decay or trauma. They serve as an excellent alternative to crowns (caps) because the preparation of onlays requires the removal of less tooth structure. Onlays are virtually identical to inlays, with the primary difference being that one or more of the chewing cusps are also affected and need to be incorporated into the restoration.

Like most dental restorations, onlays are not always permanent and may require replacement at some point in the future. However, they are highly durable and can last for many years, providing you with a beautiful, long-lasting smile.

Scenarios that may call for onlay restorations include:

  • Broken or fractured teeth.
  • Cosmetic enhancement.
  • Decayed teeth.
  • Fractured fillings.
  • Large fillings.
  • What does the process of getting an onlay involve?

The procedure for getting an onlay generally requires two appointments. Your first appointment will entail taking several highly accurate impressions (molds), which will be used to create your custom onlay and a temporary restoration.

While your tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any decay and/or old filling materials. The area will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared, shaping the surface to properly fit an onlay restoration. A temporary filling will be applied to protect your tooth while your onlay is being made by a dental laboratory.

At your second appointment, your new onlay will be carefully and precisely cemented into place. A few adjustments may be necessary to ensure a proper fit and comfortable bite.

At the end of your treatment, you will receive care instructions. Practicing good oral hygiene, maintaining a balanced diet, and scheduling regular dental visits will contribute to the lifespan of your new onlay.
