Composite Fillings
A composite filling, which matches the color of your teeth, is a type of restorative treatment used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay, cracks, fractures, and so on. In this process, the decayed or affected area of the tooth is removed and replaced with a composite filling.
Various types of filling materials exist, each presenting its own pros and cons. You and your dentist can deliberate the most suitable options for restoring your teeth. Today, composite fillings and silver amalgam fillings are the most commonly used. Due to their color, composite fillings blend well with the existing teeth, making them the preferred choice for front teeth or other visible areas.
Like most dental restorations, composite fillings are not designed to last forever and might require replacement over time. However, they are extremely durable and can last for many years, providing you with a long-lasting, attractive smile.
Reasons to consider composite fillings:
- To repair chipped teeth.
- To close gaps between two teeth.
- To mend cracked or broken teeth.
- To fix decayed teeth.
- To restore worn teeth.
- How is the process of placing composite fillings?
Usually, composite fillings can be installed in a single appointment. After numbing the tooth, your dentist will eliminate any decay as needed. The area will then be meticulously cleaned and prepared before the new filling is inserted. If the decay was close to the tooth’s nerve, a special medication will be applied for extra protection. The composite filling is then carefully placed, shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its initial shape and function.
It’s common to experience sensitivity to heat and cold when composite fillings are first put in place; however, this sensitivity will fade shortly after your tooth adjusts to the new filling.
Upon the completion of your treatment, you will receive instructions for aftercare. Adhering to good oral hygiene habits, maintaining a healthy diet, and scheduling regular dental check-ups will help prolong the lifespan of your new fillings.
